A garden offers much more than beautiful decoration. It’s not even necessary that you have a green thumb. A garden provides its owner with serenity, contentment, and a deeper understanding of the things in life that truly matter. The harder you work at it, the more benefits horticulture will bring you.
Pay attention to how you lay sod. Before laying sod, you have to make sure the soil is accurately prepared. Pull out any weeds and break up the soil. Lightly, but firmly compact the soil, making sure it is flat. Thoroughly water the soil. Sod must be arranged in staggered rows; each joint should offset one another. Compact the sod down so you form a flat and even surface, then fill in any crevices within the sod by using some soil. Your sod should be watered everyday for at least two weeks, then it will root itself and walk on it.
Brighten your garden with biennials and annuals. You can use biennial and annual flowers to brighten the bed, and let you change how it looks. They are very helpful when trying to fill in gaps between shrubs and perennials in an area that is sunny. Notable biennials and annuals include marigold, sunflowers, hollyhock, petunia, and cosmos.
Bulbs planted in the spring can flower all the way into summer. Bulbs are generally very simple to grow and hearty, as well; they will continue to grow for years. Remember that different bulbs will bloom at all different times of the year, so if you are careful to choose the right bulbs, you will see blooms in the early spring, and have flowers all the way to late summer.
Fall edibles are a wonderful addition to your garden. Why not plant lettuce and kale inside a hollowed-out pumpkin? Hollow out the pumpkin and spray with Wilt-Pruf to prevent rot. Now this is completed, it is time to get planting!
Take extra care of any fragile shrubs that are known to drop their leaves in the autumn. If you have a few potted shrubs, they should be shielded from the wintry weather. Connect the tops, and then place a sheet over the top of the wigwam. This is better than using plastic to wrap the plant, as more air can circulate.
Fertilizer in the garden is a must. Manure is a great garden additive, but it is important that you choose a manure that has been composted commercially so that there is less of a risk of pathogens. Of all the fertilizing options available, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose as long as you use something.
Try growing your peas indoors for the first couple months. Pea seeds tend to germinate much better when planted indoors, before being moved to an outside garden. The seedling may also be hardier, which means that they can better resist disease and attacks from pests. You can transplant the seedlings outside after they are sturdy enough.
You should purchase a wheelbarrow, as well as a kneeling stool to help you garden. It can be very uncomfortable on the knees when working so close to the ground, so a light, portable stool makes horticulture easier. A wheelbarrow will come in handy to easily move dirt, rocks and other heavy objects.
When horticulture, remember to take care of your knees! Bending over for extended periods can be harmful to your joints and muscles. Kneeling is a preferred way to get to your plants while minimizing back pain. Use a pad to kneel upon and protect your knees from possible pain.
Make the most of the time spent in your garden. Don’t waste thirty minutes looking around for a tool. Prepare all of your tools prior to working in the garden, and then put them away neatly when finished. Invest in a tool belt or wear pants that have lots of pockets.
Coffee Grounds
Add used coffee grounds to your garden soil. Plants can use the nitrogenous nutrients found in coffee grounds. Nitrogen is generally a way to make your plants grow bigger, better and faster.
Regularity is the key to keeping your organic garden in order, don’t let your list of chores pile up. Sometimes it might prove difficult to get in a little horticulture time every day. However, you shouldn’t fret, as there are a few things you can do that can minimize the time you spend horticulture when you do manage to get to it. For example, if you are playing in the yard with your child, take a few moments to pull some weeds as well.
Use these tips to bring life back to your garden. Your plants and shrubs will thank you from the bottoms of their roots. If you give gardening a chance and see it through, it can be a life changing experience, so hop to it!
