A garden makes a home look great but does even more than that. It is also more than just something people with green thumbs can do. It is a way to provide the person tending it with peace, tranquility, and an appreciation of life itself. Horticulture is best when you have the knowledge to do it right.
Your tool handles can easily be used as handy rulers. Tools that have long handles such as rakes, hoes and shovels can be used in place of a measuring stick. On the floor, simply lay out the handles, then take a tape measure and run it next to them. Label the distances onto them using a permanent marker pen. When you are gardening next, you’ll have a ruler beside you at all times.
Climbing Plants
Cover fences and walls with climbing plants. These climbing plants will help beautify an old fence, and they are fast workers too. They also work to cover up old, and possibly dead, vegetation. Some varieties of these plants will have to be tethered to some sort of support, but other varieties will be able to attach to the medium they are climbing. Some climbers that have proven to be reliable are honeysuckle, jasmine, wisteria, clematis, and climbing roses.
When winter comes, you can save a few plants by transferring them inside the house. You might want to transplant your most valuable varieties. Carefully dig up the plants, using caution not to disturb the roots, then transfer into a pot.
Cooling weather of early fall signals the opportune time to plant seasonal edibles. Instead of using regular clay pots this year for planting lettuce and kale, try a pumpkin container instead! Simply carve open the top of a pumpkin so you can remove the innards, and then spray inside and out with something like Wilt-Pruf to prevent pumpkin rotting. Once you’ve done that, you can plant!
When you decide to add vegetables into your garden space, be aware that they must be placed where they will receive direct sunlight for a minimum of six hours daily. Most vegetables need at least that much sun exposure to grow properly. This is true of some flowers.
Start peas inside in a container, rather than planting the seeds outdoors. By initially planting them indoors, the seeds tend to germinate better. They will also be stronger, and better equipped to resist disease and insects. Once the seedlings have become hardy enough to survive, you can transplant them to your outdoor garden.
Take a look at planting berry-producing evergreens in your yard. The berries will provide a boost of color to your backyard, even during the colder months when most of the other vegetation has been drained of their color. Other winter plants include the American Holly, Winterberry, The American Cranberrybush and the Common Snowberry.
When you water your garden, do it with care. To save time, use a soaker type hose so each plant doesn’t need individual watering from the nozzle of a hose or a little watering can. Turn the water pressure on low so the soaker hose will not harm tender plants. Let it water the plants for a while as you do other things.
To create an attractive, quintessentially English garden, you need to use a mixture of different plants that all grow to varying heights in each bed. If you want a more organized look, select plants that will grow to the same height and put them in the same bed.
If you want a sustainable garden, leave part of it undisturbed as a home for the wildlife in the area. You will find that many of the supporting cast of insects and birds that aid in plant production and pollination will be present on your land and actually help your developed gardens to produce better.
Keep your garden tools close at hand to make the most of your horticulture time. Carry a large bucket with you or wear pants with a lot of pockets. You should be able to do your garden work quickly if you keep a trowel, gloves, small pruning shears, and other handy devices close to you.
You can stop mud from being tracked into your house by covering your dirty gardening shoes with plastic bags. You will save time and be back in the garden much more quickly by doing this.
Apply these tips to make your garden a beautiful oasis. The joy of watching your plants grow and blossom will make you happy to have tried. Gardening is a way of relieving stress and making the world a prettier place so go out and start growing things and bringing life back to the world.
