Gardening is much more than a way to spruce up your yard. It’s not even necessary that you have a green thumb. Gardening can have a very calming effect, and can really slow life down a bit, allowing you to find your inner peace. The effects can be profound, especially if you have any talent at it.
Start your plants in containers before transferring them to the garden. Doing this will increase the survival rate of all your outdoor plants. Seeds can’t always thrive in gardens, and are often eaten by birds. Your seedlings will be ready to be planted when you remove your old mature plants.
Fight pests before you even plant, by getting your soil in shape. Healthier plants are greater in strength and resistance to illness and insects. You want to cultivate quality soil with adequate salt levels, which leads to healthy plants.
Plants that climb can hide fences and walls. Many climbers can cover the wall or fence in as little as one growing season. You don’t have to worry about removing trees between the climbing plants and the fence, because the trees don’t present obstacles to the climbers’ growth. Some people use climbers as a natural “ceiling” to arbors. Some require ties attaching them to supports, but others will attach themselves to any surface nearby. Honeysuckle and jasmine are very beautiful varieties of such climbers.
Always make sure to mow your lawn to the appropriate length, always making sure that the cut is not too close. By leaving your grass a little higher off the ground, it give the roots a chance to grow deep into the soil which makes the lawn stronger, and that helps keep it from drying out. When grass is cut too low the roots will not grow as deep, and your lawn may suffer from brown patches.
If you’re growing veggies in the garden, they need to be in a spot that lets them get about six hours of sun daily. Most vegetables that can be grown need that much sun to grow well and quickly. This arrangement will also benefit some types of flowers.
Irises can benefit from being separated. If you divide the overgrown clumps of flowers, you’ll find that your stock grows proportionally. Lift the dead bulbous irises. They will literally split in your hand, flowering the next year after replanting. Utilize a knife if you are trying to divide rhizomes. Throw away the center after carefully cutting new sprouts from the exterior. If done properly, each piece that remains for planting should have a minimum of one viable offshoot. Immediately replant all your selected cuttings.
If you plan on growing peas, you should consider starting them indoors instead of beginning them outside. When you plant the seeds indoors, your seeds will start to germinate better. Seedlings raised indoors are hardier, too; they can stand up better to diseases and insects. After the seedlings have grown strong indoors, it will be time for you to transplant them to outdoor beds.
Pest Problem
Look for targeted pesticides instead of using popular but damaging broad-spectrum products. These pesticides will kill every type of pest in your garden, including beneficial bugs that eat garden pests. Since these pesticides often affect the good bugs more than the bad, using them can actually increase your pest problem. If you respond to the growing pest problem with more broad-spectrum pesticide, you only continue the harmful cycle.
Tend to a garden as a way to relax. There are many ways to find personal relaxation and peace. Gardening is easily one of the most relaxing and gratifying ways to spend your extra time. While you do have to invest a little bit of money, the returns on that are huge. One particularly enjoyable return is the pride you will feel when you grow your own food.
Make sure that you wear appropriate clothing when you garden so as to avoid any sun damage. Try wearing a large sunhat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes, and use sunscreen on any exposed skin. By protecting yourself from the sun’s rays, you lower your risk of getting sunburns or skin cancer.
Vegetables get softer as the temperature goes up, so you could damage your vegetables if you pick them during the hottest hours. Cut vegetables off at the vine, and don’t twist them off, as this could hurt the plant.
Beautiful insects are attracted to heather when you plant it. Heather is desirable to bees; when heather emerges in early spring, it can be a source of nectar. Spiders, ground beetles and other useful insects are drawn to heather beds because they don’t tend to get jostled around. If you do have to tend to your heather, wear gloves in case you accidentally annoy one of the residents!
Horticulture can be hard on your knees. Most people can’t bend for long periods while standing. You should kneel while tending to your plants for the sake of reducing stress to your spine. A knee pad can be placed under your knees to protect them from damage and strain while you are working.
Keep your tools handy to work more efficiently. Large pockets or a sturdy bucket can be used to store tools. Make sure your trowel, pruning shears, gloves and other important tools are always handy. This will allow you to make easy work of your gardening up-keep!
Sprouting seeds need less warmth than before. You should move your sprouted plants farther from the heat when they are past the sprouting stage. Uncover your containers; the plastic wrap traps humidity, so you need to remove it to stop your plants from overheating. Watch your seeds closely to know how to go about this.
